The Turing Test, if you haven’t heard of it, is a multi-faceted scientific challenge. It is not unlike the classic televised game show. The test requires a human and computer to interact with each other in a controlled environment. While it is possible to make the machine mimic the humans, the competition isn’t always a cakewalk.

One of the more interesting parts of the test is the judging process. A panel of judges can award points to a hidden entity for a number of criteria. It is thought to be the best of the lot. Other tests include an AI program that can watch television shows. Interestingly, it is also capable of generating text messages.

Artificial Stupidity

Artificial stupidity is a term used to describe a type of artificial intelligence. Turing created two tests that can be used to identify the intelligence of a machine. These tests are called the “Turing test” and the “Turing test II.”

To pass the first test, the AI must be able to perform the same tasks as a human. However, the second test eliminates the human, replacing her with a robot.

Confederate Effect

It was named after ELIZA, a computer program that was created at MIT in the 1960s. ELIZA was designed to behave as a psychotherapist. When the user provided a statement, ELIZA looked for a certain keyword. If it found it, it would respond with a riposte. But if it didn’t, it would fall back on a generic prompt.

Some people have been able to form emotional bonds with ELIZA. Others were unable to make the connection. And still others felt like they were talking to a real person.

While the Eliza effect was an important step in enhancing the human-computer relationship, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the computer is smart. In fact, some critics argue that the full Turing test rules weren’t followed.

Another issue is intentional tampering. For instance, a human may try to hack a machine. This is a legitimate concern.

Reverse Turing Test
